I wore homemade costumes when I was a young one, but that was long ago. It seems, I was always a ghost. We usually had homemade trick or treat bags made from paper grocery bags or sacks as we called them. I think making homemade costumes makes them more personal and having the children help make them is a good way for them to learn crafting. I love your post. :)

I have always enjoyed making my kid's costumes when money was tight. I remember cutting up old clothes to make patches on sleepers and painting red noses to make them into clowns. I tend to make my own costume last minute every year, too, because I decide last minute to dress up.

Unfortunately my son is out of the trick or treating stage, says he's "to old". But during his trick or treat days I always bought his costumes. Now when I was younger a long time ago, my mom always made my costumes and then when I was old enough to do my own costume I still made it. I myself didn't care much for store bought costumes, they're just not as creative in my opinion. I also love the memories I have of my mother and I spending time together making my costumes.

When my kids were little many years ago, I most always created their costumes with what we had. It was too expensive to spend all that money on a halloween costume that they would outgrow the next year. We saved the accessories from year to year, I had a whole box dedicated to this. And either used clothes we had, or went to a thrift store and bought cheap stuff that could be cut up. My kids never complained.
