My first grandchild was born 12 years ago, and i can remember the day I got the news how excited I was.   The very first thing I wanted to do was crochet a baby blanket for her! The problem was that I hadn’t crocheted since I was a kid.   I had always wanted to learn how to do it better, yet just never found the time.

I was blessed enough to know a dear friend who taught me some basic stitches, and I managed to come up with a small blanket.   I have to admit though, it took me the entire pregnancy to make one small little baby blanket, but hey, I got it done!! My two oldest granddaughters have started back to public school this year and I am realizing that in just the one school year that they were home with me learning, that things have changed quite a bit.  

The first thing I realized is that so much more of their school day is spent with technology.  The girls are in 5th and 7th grade, and they don’t have physical books for several classes. What do they use then?   The answer is simple, computers. It does concern me for those households that don’t have a computer at home. I worry that those children are at a disadvantage.   Yes, they can go to a local library and do whatever work needs to be done, but if that is a young child, then the parent also has to find the time to sit and do the work with that child.   read more

If you need quick access to extra money during retirement, it may be worthwhile to take out a reverse mortgage on your home.  As a grandparent raising our grandchildren, my husband and I had considered a reverse mortgage, simply because the unexpected expense at a time in life when we had become disabled, we didn’t have any extra income.   There are tons of unexpected expenses when we were put in this situation, like school clothes, school supplies, clothing for the girls, shoes, sports activities , etc.  I could go on and on with these expenses.   There are some grandparents that are put in a financial bind because they have to hire attorneys to fight for custody of the grandchildren.   Hiring an attorney for a custody battle, or adoption procedures, can run into the thousands of dollars.   Thankfully we didn’t have to deal with that.  Unlike a traditional mortgage, a reverse mortgage will not require monthly payments on your part. In fact, it is more likely that you will receive monthly payments, unless you select a line of credit or single large payment. I use to think that as I got older, that life would slow down.   What I have found is that since I no longer have a 9 to 5 job to go to, I am busier than ever.  It seems as though I am always running in one direction or another!!  Don’t get me wrong, I love being busy and I thoroughly enjoy spending time with my kids and grandchildren.
