Road Trip Activities for Kids of All Ages!

Image by digital designer from Pixabay

I am very blessed to have 3 wonderful adult children and 12 grandchildren.  Over the years, we have done a ton of road trips with our own children and multiple road trips with 7 of our grandchildren.  As a result, we have picked up a few “tricks of the trade” for traveling with kids of all ages.

We recently took a road trip with 5 of the grandchildren and it made me think about how many things we did during that long trip to keep them all busy. Well, to be honest, what my daughter and I both did to keep them busy. I thought what a great thing to share with other busy parents that might need some pointers on how to keep their kids of all ages busy while driving to visit family for the holidays or during vacations!

This article will be broken up into a couple of age groups.   Teenagers/school aged kids, and toddlers.   It is easy to just give our kids/grandkids an electronic , start the car and go. However, if you are making a long road trip, the electronic device only works for so long. So I have listed some things we have done over the years with our own kids and I hope that you find something here that is helpful to you on your next long road trip with your kids, no matter what their ages are!

TEENAGERS / SCHOOL AGED KIDS

  • TECHNOLOGY: The obvious one is going to be technology.  We usually allow our granddaughters (14 yrs & 15 yrs) to have their phones for part of the trip.   However we do have them put their phones away every hour or two and we play what they call the “old fashioned” games.   You know the ones we played as kids before everybody had a cellphone!

  • ABC GAME:   One person starts with the letter A, they have to find a word outside of the car that starts with the letter A.  (on a billboard, restaurant sign, license plate, etc)  Then it goes to the next person with the letter B.  Game goes on and on until you reach the end of the alphabet.   Nobody wants to be the one that lands on the letters Q and Z!!

  • EYE SPY GAME:   Eye spy with my little eye.  Most people will know this one.  Somebody says I spy with my little eye, something green.   Everybody else has to guess what the object is.  (this game is usually for when you are sitting still or everything in the car)

  • NEVER HAVE I EVER GAME:  One person says, “Never have I ever ____”  Ex:  Never have I ever been to Texas.   The other people guess if that is true or not.  Then it goes to the next person.   Whoever has the most correct guesses wins.

  • LICENSE PLATE GAME:   You as the adult choose a state that everybody will search for.  Then everybody starts “collecting” how many license plates they see with that state  on them.  We usually give a time frame.   In 30 minutes, how many can you find?  Whoever has the most wins.

  • TICK TAC TOE or HANGMAN:   We usually bring a small whiteboard that you can pick up at the dollar store.  Then at some point during the trip either the kids play these games  with each other, passing the board back and forth or we will play with them.

BABIES / TODDLERS

  • QUIET GAME: Everybody has to be quiet. The goal is to see who can be quiet the longest. (the winner gets a “special” prize that mom or dad have packed….something small from the Dollar tree you picked out)

  • MAGNET GAME: Put a bunch of letter magnets in a tin box (old lunch boxes work great for this!) Give your toddlers a word to spell. Tell them we are spelling the word “DAD” So they need to find the letter D. Once they find it , have them put on the top of the tin box… have them find the next letter A. etc. Might need some assistance , depending on ages…but is a great game to play with a sibling
  • WIPE OFF BOOK: This takes a little planning. Get a binder and some clear sheet protectors. Print out some pages with Letters or Numbers that the kids will trace. Put those pages in the clear sheet protectors , tape the top of it (so the pages don’t slide out). Give the kids an Expo Marker and let them trace the letters. They can do this over and over. You just wipe off the page when they are done so they can do it over and over again.

  • TABLET TIME: Load their favorite movie onto a tablet and allow them to watch it for short periods of time. That way it is special and they will look forward to getting to use it. It is easy to use this the whole trip, but I have found that if you stimulate their brains with some of the other things listed, the tablet can be used to get them to wind down and maybe, just maybe they will take a nap during the road trip.

  • LITTLE PRIZES: Pack small gifts for each child to open every hour of your trip. As long as they have behaved, they will get a small prize. Example: things from Dollar Tree, coloring book, stuffed animal, etc

  • SPECIAL SNACKS: Pack special snacks in the half snack zip lock bags. Something that the kids don’t normally get, so it seems special to them.

I would LOVE to hear your feedback! Is there something special that you do on road trips that you can share with us? I am always looking for more input when it comes to keeping the grandkids happy and content during one of our family vacations!! Please comment below and let me know your input!

PUBLIC SCHOOL OR HOME SCHOOL??

PUBLIC SCHOOL OR HOME SCHOOL??  That is the question of the week!!

I have 2 granddaughters that I pulled from the public school system last year, They were headed into 4th and 6th grade.  I am going to be bold faced honest here, I was scared to death to home-school them!! Yet, I was just as scared to leave them in the public school system.  So I did a TON of research and decided to pull them. I wasn’t confident enough to feel as though I could do a good job with them by doing what is referred to as “traditional home-school”, so I enrolled them in a program that is Nationwide, called K12.   They still followed all the educational teaching as if they were in public school, but they were taught at home, via a computer.  The wonderful thing about K12, is that they will supply basically everything you need.  They send a computer, printer, books, rulers, microscope, art supplies, music supplies, etc for FREE!!

Each day they  had a class for all the  major subject: Math, English Language , Science and Social Studies (history). In addition to that, they had additional time that was allotted each week for Art and Music.  Every morning they were up , had breakfast and signed onto a virtual classroom with a live teacher and they participated in a classroom with other kids.  I have to admit, 99% of the time we were doing “school” in their pajamas.  This program is a wonderful tool for those that don’t want their children in public schools , for whatever reason, and yet don’t feel as though traditional home-school is within their realm of possibilities.  Each state has what is called Virtual school and for my state that was Tennessee Virtual Academy (TNVA)

The girls still were required to do 6.5 hours a day of either live classes or live classes combined with assignments that were assigned through their teachers.  The majority of that work was done on the computer for my oldest granddaughter, the one in 6th grade. We did some assignments that were offline, yet we still had to “turn in the work” via her classroom sign in.  The 4th grader did a lot online as well, yet she had more offline work that I helped her with individually. We did things such as spelling , studying sentence structure, vocabulary, etc. Once she had completed her off line work, she would have to go online and take a test based on what we had studied.   The wonderful thing is you don’t have to have a large area for this type of schooling, I literally used my kitchen table.  We hung a whiteboard in the diking room area that kept our daily schedules and little words of encouragement or wisdom for the day.

Both the girls still had weekly tests they had to take, they received a grade for that work in addition to any classroom assignments for the week.   At the end of the year, we also did the state mandated TCAP testing. That was the only testing that we had to go to a designated site and they were tested in a live one on one testing site.  Of course, they received a quarterly report card with their grades each semester, just as they would in public schools. Several times during the year TNVA scheduled what they called “outings” where we were able to gather with other kids and teachers from TNVA and we had a fun day.   In addition to that, my girls were enrolled in a local YMCA program for home-school kids on Friday afternoons, where they were able to get together with kids their ages and had some organized play, they went swimming and basically just had some time away from “school” on Fridays. We also had PE daily at home, basically consisted of jumping and doing tricks on trampoline or riding bikes outside

As they year came to an end, they both had told me they wanted to go back to public school for the following school year.  Their mom and I had a lot of debates about that, yet we decided in the end that we would give it a try. We had originally pulled them due to several reasons, one of the main reasons though was we didn’t feel as though their individual educational needs were being met.  In addition to that , we were concerned about some of the friend choices being made. So here we are , on Fall Break, nine weeks into their school year.

The question we are facing now is should we continue with public school or go to the next step, which is traditional home-school.  For a variety of reasons, I won’t go back to the K12 system. The main reason though, is the freedom that homeschooling will give us as opposed to public school online, aka K12/TNVA.   We were so locked into a schedule with TNVA, and that works great for some parents, yet for me I want the freedom to be able to teach them in order to LEARN, not just teach them to TEST.   Sadly, I think that is what our public school system has become.

My youngest granddaughter that we had pulled from school last year, so far is doing great.  Her grades are showing A’s and B’s. However, if you look at the actual work she is doing, they haven’t taught her very much that is new this year as opposed to what she was learning last  year. I understand that they do review for the first few weeks, but her ENTIRE 9 weeks has been review with very few new things taught. My older granddaughter who is in 7th grade is FAILING.   She is getting D’s and F’s. THAT is concerning to say the least!! We have tried communicating with her teachers and the end result is she is still failing. Now, I know a lot of that is on her and she just isn’t applying herself.   I know that there has been some bullying and adjustments, but how long do we wait to see if she pulls her grades up? That is the question that we are debating right now!!

When do you make the final choice to pull your child from public school?   I know in my heart, that she will do better being taught at home. She will have the individual attention needed to make sure that she is doing the work and actually applying it.   After having had both girls home last year, I learned a lot and I feel that I could successfully teach her at home, through a traditional home-school curriculum. To be honest, I basically already have it picked out what I would use this year.   As with any parent that home-schools for the first time, of course I am a little nervous and want to be certain that I give her the best education possible!

We are still in the decision making stages of Public School or Home-school question.  There is so much more that goes into why I feel that home school is a better option for them at this point, but I will leave that to be talked about another day! I will update again once we have made a final choice and of course let you know how that is going!!   So until the saga continues…..

I would love to hear from ANY and ALL of my readers that fall in the following categories!!   Please respond in my comments section…as I am always looking for great feedback!!
  • Currently home-school?
  • Success and failures at homeschooling?
  • Home-schooled in the past?
  • Public School at home? (K12 or another Virtual Academy)
  • Any other feedback on homeschooling vs public school!

Children, Technology and Apps

My two oldest granddaughters have started back to public school this year and I am realizing that in just the one school year that they were home with me learning, that things have changed quite a bit.

The first thing I realized is that so much more of their school day is spent with technology.  The girls are in 5th and 7th grade, and they don’t have physical books for several classes. What do they use then?   The answer is simple, computers. It does concern me for those households that don’t have a computer at home. I worry that those children are at a disadvantage.   Yes, they can go to a local library and do whatever work needs to be done, but if that is a young child, then the parent also has to find the time to sit and do the work with that child.

This whole subject has me thinking how can I help not only the older girls with their schoolwork, but with the youngest grandchildren.   I have four grandchildren that are ages 2 and under. By the time they reach school age, I have no doubt that they will probably have very few school books, if they use any at all.   I have purchased a tablet for Serenity, who is currently 2 yrs old. I bought it for her when she was 19 months old, and she is a pro at using it! It amazes me how kids adapt to technology!!   Her mom is very conscientious about how often she is allowed to play on it, and she tries to be certain that the apps she has on the tablet are educational. I can’t say that they are all educational, however it has shown to be a very useful tool to her and the baby.  She also has a one year old baby, who believe it or not, also uses the tablet!

As I think about my older grandchildren and watch them grow and learn, I can’t help but wonder where their individual interests will steer them in life.  My 11 year old granddaughter has such a mind for math that a career in technology is something I can easily see her doing

When I think about the apps that I use now, I wonder if that is a career path that one of the girls will choose.   There are so many great app designers that assist with making an idea turn into a reality and become an actual app that people will use.  I think it is an a career path that we should be encouraging our children to explore. I honestly wonder how many kids are already creating apps that people are using?   Have you ever thought about that?  If they aren’t creating them now, then I would imagine they will be soon. I mean kids spend hours upon hours upon hours on their different devices and they are the perfect candidate for creating apps that kids need and would use!  For that matter, I am certain that they are capable of designing apps that adults either currently use or will be using in the near future.

I am excited to see where my grandchildren will end up in their chosen careers and paths in life.   Technology is just one avenue as a possibility as to where they will go. With the world today, and they way technology has taken over our day to day lives, I think it would be a great career choice.   Yet you never know, they could just as easily decide to be a pilot, a nurse, doctor , veterinarian, etc.  No matter what they choose to do in life, I know one thing for certain….I will encourage them in each step of their dreams and goals.  After all, what is a Nana for?

Tell me , what are your  dreams and goals for your kids or grand kids?   Have you ever thought about creating an app? If so, what is your idea?   Be certain to check the link I have above, to assist you in getting started if that is YOUR dream or your child’s dream!!   I would love to hear from you in the comments below!!   Be sure to let me know what you think about this subject!!
